Abe walked out of the captain’s office, satisfied with himself. Nate would be taken off Sonny’s case. He and Nate were at odds over it, but Abe didn’t care. It was absolutely unfair that someone so biased would remain the investigating officer.

“What if it’s actually him doing it?”

“I was with him last night, the whole time,” Abe said.

Nate rolled his eyes. “And that could’ve been a racoon that set it off; you don’t know.”

“You don’t know him—”

“And you’re too close to know him. Excuse me for not being swayed by a pair of pretty blue eyes.”

Abe turned to Nate, eyes intense. “You’re out of line, Officer Landis. You’re not on the case anymore, and neither am I.”

“Am I out of line, Officer Ellis?”

“Yeah, you are. He is clearly being harassed, and it was your job to investigate it, regardless of what you thought may or may not be going on.”

“He’s a veteran with severe PTSD and a violent past.”

Abe approached him, anger burning in his eyes. “That violent past you’re hung up on? He says it was an accident. His mother woke him up from a nightmare, and he didn’t know where he was.”

“Yeah? And what if it’s you next?”

Abe thought of how Sonny had scrambled from the bed, frightened and completely in another time and place, how embarrassed he’d been when he’d seen what he’d done in the throes of his nightmare. He thought of how he’d told him to get out once he realized how much Abe knew and hadn’t been honest about, how violated he must’ve felt. “Don’t worry, there won’t be a next time with me.”

“Oh yeah?”

“Yeah.” Abe turned away, grabbing his keys, smartphone, and sunglasses from his desk.

“Abe…”

“I’ll be around,” he tossed over his shoulder, storming out before Nate could piss him off further. He stopped on the front steps of the police station, seeing that he had a couple of text messages from Sonny.

Hey. I’m sorry for lashing out last night.

Abe swallowed hard, biting his lip as he read the second message.

Can we talk?

He began typing a response, typing and erasing half a dozen times before giving up and calling him.

“Hey,” Sonny answered on the first ring.

“Sonny,” Abe said, sitting down on the steps, his legs shaky under him. “I’m so glad you texted.”

“I just, I want to talk. I have some things to explain about my past, in my words, if you’d like to hear it.”

“You don’t have to explain anything to me,” Abe said, hearing the guilty quality in Sonny’s voice. “I should’ve been honest with you from the start. I’m the one who owes an explanation.”

“Maybe we both do,” Sonny said. “After I’m off tonight?”

“I’ll meet you at your place.”

“I can text you when I’m off. Should be around nine thirty.”

“Sounds good.”

“All right, I’ll see you then.”

“Okay. And, Sonny?”

“Hmm?”

“Thank you. Thanks for not throwing this or me away.”

“I’ll talk to you tonight.”

They hung up.
